Low level light therapy — also called photobiomodulation — uses gentle, painless light delivered through a comfortable mask to stimulate the cells of the eyelids and meibomian glands. No heat you can feel, no contact with the eye, no downtime. Here are the questions patients ask us most.
Specific wavelengths of red and near-infrared light are absorbed by the mitochondria — the energy factories inside cells — boosting their activity. Applied to the eyelids, this photobiomodulation effect stimulates the meibomian glands, supports tissue repair and calms inflammation. Warmed, better-functioning glands produce better oil, and better oil means a more stable, slower-evaporating tear film.
You relax with a light-emitting mask over your closed eyes for around fifteen minutes. It is completely painless — most patients find it genuinely relaxing — and you can drive and return to normal activities immediately afterwards. There is no gel, no anaesthetic and no recovery time.
LLLT uses low-power, non-laser light at intensities that do not heat or damage tissue, delivered with the eyes closed. It has a long safety record across dermatology and medicine. Your clinician will review your history first, as with any treatment.
A typical course is three to four sessions spaced one to two weeks apart, with maintenance sessions as needed. Benefits usually build over the course rather than arriving after one visit — your tear film measurements are repeated so improvement is demonstrated, not assumed.
Patients with meibomian gland dysfunction and lid inflammation — including those who want a completely contact-free, gentle option, and those for whom IPL is unsuitable because of skin type, medications or light sensitivity. It also pairs naturally with IPL: many protocols combine the two in the same visit, IPL treating the inflammatory vessels and LLLT stimulating the glands.
IPL delivers brief, intense pulses of broad-spectrum light that close abnormal inflammatory vessels; LLLT bathes the tissue in continuous low-power light that stimulates cellular energy production. Different mechanisms, complementary results — which is why they are often used together.
Published studies of photobiomodulation for dry eye and MGD show improvements in gland function, tear film stability and symptoms, particularly in combination with IPL. As a newer entrant it has a smaller evidence base than LipiFlow or IPL alone — we say that plainly, and we track your own measurements so the treatment justifies itself on your eyes.
Please note: not every treatment is available at every member practice of the Dry Eye Specialist Group. Your nearest practice will confirm what is available locally and can refer you within the group if a specific treatment suits your eyes.
