Dry Eye Treatment in Hastings & Hawke's Bay

Hawke's Bay's Dry Eye Specialist Group member is Shattky Optometrists, with practices in Hastings and Waipukurau. Between them they serve Hastings, Havelock North, Napier, Flaxmere, Clive and Central Hawke's Bay with structured tear-film assessment and the modern treatments that actually fix dry eye — IPL and LipiFlow among them — without a trip out of the region.

What dry eye treatment in Hastings involves

Every assessment starts with measurement, not guesswork: infrared imaging of the meibomian glands (meibography), tear break-up time, tear-film analysis, tear volume, blink and lid-margin examination, and a check for blepharitis and Demodex. Treatment is then matched to your findings — IPL therapy for inflammatory evaporative dry eye, LipiFlow for blocked meibomian glands, BlephEx and lid treatments for blepharitis and lid-margin disease. Not every treatment is available at every member practice; Rexon Eye and Tixel, for instance, are offered elsewhere in the group, and Shattky will refer within the group where your eyes need something not available locally.

Common questions from Hawke's Bay patients

Do I need a referral?

No — you can book a dry eye assessment directly with Shattky Optometrists in Hastings or Waipukurau.

I'm in Napier — is it worth driving to Hastings?

For most patients, yes. Hastings is about 20 minutes from Napier, and Shattky is the only Dry Eye Specialist Group member in Hawke's Bay — the structured assessment, IPL and LipiFlow are not something you can get from a drops-and-leaflet appointment closer to home. Courses are scheduled around travel.

How many IPL sessions will I need?

Typically four, spaced a few weeks apart, then a maintenance session once or twice a year. Whether IPL is the right tool for you at all is decided by the assessment first — if your problem is low tear volume or plain blepharitis, you'll be told so and treated accordingly.

Specialist dry eye clinic or a general optometry chain?

Hastings and Napier both have optometry chains and department-store optical outlets that list dry eye among their services. The difference is what happens before treatment. A general practice typically offers drops, a warm-compress leaflet, and perhaps a per-session IPL price. A specialist dry eye clinic starts by measuring: infrared meibography to photograph your oil glands and see how much tissue is left to save, tear-film stability, tear volume, and a lid-margin examination for blepharitis and Demodex. Only then is a treatment prescribed — IPL, LipiFlow, BlephEx — and, just as often, a plain statement of which treatment is not worth your money. Shattky Optometrists works this way, and is independent and optometrist-owned.
