Mid Canterbury's Dry Eye Specialist Group member is Ashburton Eyecare — bringing IPL dry eye treatment and structured tear-film assessment to Ashburton, Methven, Rakaia, Geraldine, Tinwald and the wider district. You no longer need to drive to Christchurch for specialist dry eye care.
Until recently, IPL for dry eye meant a trip up the road to a Christchurch clinic — usually ophthalmology-priced, and usually a course of three or four sessions, each needing the drive. Ashburton Eyecare offers the same intense pulsed light technology locally, delivered by optometrists who assess your glands and tear film first and treat only what the findings support. Same technology, a fraction of the travel, optometry rather than ophthalmology consultation pricing.

IPL treats the inflammatory drivers of evaporative dry eye — the red, thickened, rosacea-type lids whose abnormal blood vessels keep the meibomian glands inflamed. Over a course of sessions it calms that inflammation and improves gland oil. It is not the right tool for purely low-tear-volume dry eye, and it does not replace lid hygiene where blepharitis is the main problem. That is why every course begins with an assessment: gland examination, tear film stability, and a plain conversation about whether IPL is worth your money in your case. Not every treatment is available at every member practice; Ashburton Eyecare refers within the group where a treatment your eyes need is offered elsewhere.
Typically three to four, spaced a few weeks apart, then a maintenance session once or twice a year. Being local makes that schedule far easier to keep than a Christchurch commute.
