Tixel 2 Treatment for Dry Eye

Tixel 2 is a thermomechanical treatment that delivers brief, precisely controlled heat to the delicate skin around the eyes — improving eyelid tissue quality, supporting meibomian gland function, and easing dry eye symptoms. Below, the questions patients ask us most.

Frequently asked questions about Tixel 2

What exactly is Tixel and how does it work?

Tixel uses a small titanium tip, heated to a controlled temperature, that touches the skin for just milliseconds at a time. That brief thermomechanical contact transfers heat into the upper layers of the skin without cutting or burning, stimulating collagen renewal and improving the quality of the eyelid tissue. Around the eyes, this supports the meibomian glands — the oil glands whose blockage drives most dry eye — and helps restore a more stable tear film.

Does it hurt?

Most patients describe a brief warm, prickling sensation. Numbing cream can be applied beforehand, and the contact time is measured in milliseconds. It is routinely performed without anaesthetic injections.

Is there downtime?

Expect mild redness and a sensation like light sunburn for a day or two, sometimes with fine dryness of the treated skin as it renews. Most people return to normal activities the same day; makeup is usually avoided for around 24 hours, and sun protection is important during healing.

How many sessions will I need?

A typical course is around three sessions spaced a few weeks apart, with improvement building over the following weeks as tissue remodels. Your clinician will measure your tear film before and after so progress is tracked objectively, not guessed.

Who is Tixel best suited to?

Patients whose dry eye involves the lid tissue itself — lax, ageing or poor-quality eyelid skin alongside meibomian gland dysfunction — and those wanting functional improvement with a cosmetic benefit around the eyes. It is not the first choice for purely aqueous-deficient dry eye; the assessment determines that before anything is booked.

How does Tixel compare with IPL or LipiFlow?

They do different jobs. IPL targets the inflammatory blood vessels that feed lid inflammation; LipiFlow physically warms and expresses blocked glands; Tixel improves the lid tissue itself. Many treatment plans sequence more than one — the right order depends on your findings.

Is the evidence as strong as for the other treatments?

Honestly: Tixel has the youngest evidence base of our treatments. Published studies show improvements in tear film stability and symptoms, and the results are promising — but the research is still maturing compared with IPL and LipiFlow. We say so plainly, and we recommend it where your findings genuinely point to it.
